Minus The Stains – “Unsoiled” – Revelstoke

Revelstoke is no longer just that “cool place in B.C.” In walks Andrew Seale an artist also known as Revelstoke from our very own Toronto, Ontario. With a new sound on the horizon and a mustache that just won’t quit, Revelstoke is entering the music scene with some buzz not far behind.

Although fairly new to the scene, the potential held by this young artist astounds us. Using guitar, mandolin, banjo, and looping it all with a foot pedal, each song is an experience in and of itself. Each song comes at you like a social experiment from it’s preparation down to it’s performance. You won’t react the same way twice, and the songs will always be a bit different changing from audience to audience, venue to venue. With an instrumentally abstract aesthetic that encapsulates his dreamily haunting vocals, we at Minus The Stains think he’s a small step from a long and engaging career.

To hear his new sound check out his performance at the Live in Bellewoods Canadian Music Week 2012 showcase shot by The Humble Empire below!

And for some more Revelstoke, check out our interview with him from Canadian Music Fest!

Until next time, never stop listening!

Minus The Stains – “Unsoiled” – Gabrielle Papillon

During Canadian Music Fest of this year we got the opportunity to speak with Gabrielle Papillon. Born in Winnipeg and currently residing in Montreal/Nova Scotia this young woman isn’t just ‘another female artist’. Her insight into the world of DIY musicians and her experiences are ones to learn from and relate to whether you’re an artist, or just a fan. She’s inspirational, and that’s all before you hear her sing!

Josh Doyle of The Ontarion said it best when he stated that, “Papillon’s acoustic delivery is the sort that will stay with you, kicking around in your head long after each track ends. Her voice has the ability to saturate your audio intake in a personal way, whilst maintaining the tempo necessary to keep your feet tapping. She has a way of articulating that gives life to the edges of those letters most people skip over.”

After getting the chance to watch her perform live, one could argue that Gabrielle could sing about making pancakes with that hauntingly emotive voice of hers and it would still cloud your head. Take into account that her lyrics are insightful, honest, and clever, and well, you’ve got a sure fire hit on your hands.

With the upcoming release of her full-length album titled, “Little Bug” we here at Minus The Stains can’t wait to watch this talented young musician grow into a force to be reckoned with on the Canadian music scene. Check out our interview with her below, and stay-tuned for more live footage of Gabrielle at Canadian Music Fest right here, on Minus The Stains.

Until next time, never stop listening.

Minus The Stains – The “Unsoiled” Series – Sandman Viper Command

We caught up with Toronto’s Sandman Viper Command during the 2012 Canadian Music Fest in Toronto this year. Check’em out!

Canadian Music Week 2012

This year was one for the books to be sure. With a lineup that just about drove this insomniac into the ground and enough day parties and sweaty moshpits to rejuvenate the dead I hereby declare Canadian Music Week 2012 a triumph of triumphs. As late as this blog post is, it is not without good reason. Minus the Stains is growing, in a multitude of ways, the most important being our new Youtube Channel. A lot more video, a lot more bands, a lot more passion. That being said there were no shows as passionately moving as Wintersleep this year.

It was a sweaty CMW night like any other, a line up down Queen Street and the excitement in the air was all you needed to know that something memorable was happening, and soon. Walking into the Horseshoe couldn’t even be described as walking since all I could do was squeeze my small frame between the herds of fans flocking the stage of Toronto’s The Horseshoe Tavern to catch the magic that is Wintersleep perform live. The crowd was full of all kinds and amongst the drunken cat calls and heckling there was an aura of calm among the crowd. There was no shoving, no crowd surfing, just highs of nostalgia and lust.

Though I couldn’t say the performance was flawless as a whole I can say with a full heart that vocalist Paul Murphy virtually ripped my heart out during their song Laser Beams, among many others. With a new album out in June of this year titled Hello Hum and a free download on their site (http://www.wintersleep.com/) of Resuscitate, their fourth track from the album, Wintersleep has quite the year ahead. Get ready for the ice to melt away from your Torontonian hearts.

This year we also watched The Trews rock out with Poor Young Things on that very same Horseshoe Tavern stage, experienced some live love in corners of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel (CMW headquarters) with Gabrielle Papillon, delved into the mind of Revelstoke, got day drunk and rocked out with Sandman Viper Command, hung out with Joseph Arthur in back alleys,  were serenaded by the extraordinary talents of Ben Caplan, and let New York’s Bear Hands mesmerize us on the wondrous stage of Sneaky Dee’s. You’ll find all that and more on our Youtube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/MinusTheStains/videos

Until next time, never stop listening.
